Man, Bush did not just shift the goalposts. He virtually changed the definition of a goal from the ball going between the goalposts to the ball going outside of the goalposts:
WILLIAMS: A lot of people have seen, in this series of speeches you're giving on Iraq, a movement in your position. They call it an acknowledgment that perhaps the mission has not gone as it was originally planned, that the U.S. would be welcomed as liberators.

BUSH: I think we are welcomed, but it was not a peaceful welcome.

Whahhhhht?

Predictably, of course, Brian Williams had no follow-up question on this gem.

Words don't mean what we think they mean anymore..."welcome", "freedom", and especially "victory". They have become hollow receptacles to wrap up the administration's splendid not-so-little war in positive sentiments.
